Elmer – the crazy shade guy

I’m not talking to the wishful thinking crowd here. This is for the ones that realize that we’ve got a real big problem and want to make the best of it.

We’ve got some hot weather coming at us. Hot weather like no one’s ever seen before. We’ve had some tastes of the heat. Chicago and the Midwest got a shot in 1995. It only killed 700 or so. Then Europe got a big hit in 2003 that killed 40-50,000 and Russia in 2010 had heat, drought, and fires that took out 10-15,000.

The thing about heat is that it’s not like cancer or diabetes that kills you after a period of decline. Heat stroke kills you that day. If an infectious disease killed as many people as the heat it would be a media field day of get vaxed, quarantined and who knows what.

The big story of the US Midwest heat wave of1995 was that most of the people that died didn’t have AC.

When the electricity goes off no one has AC.

So keeping the electricity on is what this is all about. When the grid goes down we’ve got chaos in about 24 hours.  There are regular stories on the EMP type disasters to shut down the grid, either from a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) or from a high altitude nuke. Either one is supposed to fry the electronic controls. Well maybe. But I can’t do anything about those things. Besides, it is more likely that the grid will go down from A/C overload. And that is something that I can do something about. It’s something we can all do something about.

There are a lot of ways to conserve electricity. This work is about one of those ways. One of the factors of A/C demand is the heat added to buildings from direct solar radiation. The solution to that factor is shade. If you want to cool something down first get it in the shade.

Sunshine is huge.                                                                                                                   So is shade.
