We call it the e-Pump because it is essential, ecologically sound, economical, energy efficient, and our name starts with “E”. The “e” does not however, stand for electricity. This is a hand pump that will get water out of your well when the power is off. If you’re not one of those kind of people that live in the country and drink water out of a hole in the ground, then this pump probably won’t interest you too much. But if you have a well with an electric pump that supplies the water for your home, family, and animals then you might want to think about water without electricity.
I’m sold on the SIMPLE PUMP as the best way to address the problem of getting water from your well when the grid is down. The SIMPLE PUMP is a beautiful all stainless steel hand water pump that can be fitted with a 1/5hp DC electric motor to run off of solar panels. The basic pump kit runs about $1500 and the motor kit runs another $600-$700. It looks to be worth every penny of it. My problem is saving up that much cash. I’m working on it but in the mean time, my son made a PVC hand powered water pump that is in my price range. I have one in my well now and it does the job. I showed it to my neighbor, who was over to do some hay baling for me and he immediately said, “I need one of those”. We installed one in his 4″ well along side his submersible electric pump and they both work just fine installed together.
We sell the complete pump that includes the handle and spout for the top of the well and the foot valves and intake that go down at least 10 ft. below the static water level of the well for $89. You can get the 1 1/4″ and 3/4″ PVC pipe at your local hardware to connect the two parts of the pump. The amount of pipe will depend on your well. My pump has 40ft of pipe. My neighbor’s well required a 100ft of pipe.
In addition to the pipe that connects the top part of the pump to the foot valves, you will also need to provide a well cap at the top of your casing. Most sub pumps, up to 1hp, have a 1″ down pipe. The e-Pump has a 1 1/4″ outer pipe. Most wells that have been dug in our area in the last twenty years have used a 4” PVC casing. The standard 4″ well cap for a jet pump has a 1″ hole for the down pipe and a 1 1/4″ hole for the return pipe. It works perfectly for the e-Pump to fit into a well that has a 1” pipe down to the sub pump. We replace the sub pump well cap (with a 1″ hole) with a well cap for a jet pump that has a 1″ hole and a 1 1/4″ hole. This provides a sanitary installation with your electric sub pump and an e-Pump both installed in your well at the same time.
